The District tournament for Liberty boys and girls basketball got underway this week after the Liberty boys wrapped up the regular season with a last-minute loss at Ava and a solid win at home over the Cabool Bulldogs, who also faced the Eagles in the first-round of the District tournament Tuesday night. Liberty entered the tournament after a 17-9 regular season and as the final two games showed, the Eagles have the potential to be great or go home early.

Greatness at Districts in Mountain Grove means no more fourth quarters like the one that happened at Ava. Against the Bears, the Eagles watched a six-point lead turn into a seven point loss as Ava outscored the Eagles 25-12 in the final eight minutes.

Ava simply didn’t miss very often, and they had plenty of opportunities. The Bears hit four, three-point shots in the fourth quarter and shot a lopsided 15 free-throws compared to just four attempts from the foul-line for the Eagles. Ava made 11 of their 15 attempts while the Eagles missed all four of theirs.
